The Struggle for the BIG Idea
I’m in a batting slump lately. I have not hit the (metaphorical) home run in a while. In my business, hitting the home run is coming up with the BIG idea, creative new ideas for compositions and musical projects. A couple of weeks back, Lisa gave me the assignment of coming up with the premise […]

Late last week, I completed the 350th composition in my portfolio – a short piano piece that will be included on an upcoming album of solo piano compositions coming out next year. I’ve never been much for celebrating milestones. But for some reason, I did feel a sense of pride within, for this one. You […]

Me to We – Recording Day
Last Thursday, I was fortunate to head into Canterbury Studios to record three of my compositions for an upcoming album called Me to We. These three “classical” chamber works are based on the themes of solitude, yearning and being in love (in that order). For scheduling purposes, we had to record them in reverse order. […]

    What Mom Means To Me
When I was a kid, my mom would sometimes make a dinner that I didn’t like. I would say, “Mom, I don’t like it” (in a whining voice). She would reply quite directly, “you don’t have to like it, you just have to eat it.” And that’s my mom in a nutshell – direct, passionate, […]

    Can monotonous music be interesting?
This is the musical dilemma I placed myself in when I started composing Thirty Minutes of a Three Million Minute Journey. I wanted this elongated chamber work to maintain the same mood […]

The soundscapes are interesting, infectious, and hypnotic. The CD
[I Can See You] works best for those who want musical ambiance to fill their sonic space. I found the listening experience quite refreshing, highly original and unique.

Frank Horvat is one of the few pianists whose living includes performing the music they themselves have created. It’s interesting that, during these anniversary years for Chopin and Liszt, the two seminal composer-pianists, I haven’t noticed many people stopping to appreciate those who carry on that tradition.
