Love in 6 Stages - composed by Frank Horvat

Programme Notes

I composed Gaze to be the first song on my concept album, Love in 6 Stages. Each song on this album is 10 minutes in length. And while it has a pop sensibility, my inspiration probably came from classical and ambient traditions.

Gaze is sort of the overture for the album. I wanted the innocent and melancholy nature of our protagonist to be in full view. But it was also important for the song to foreshadow some of the explosive moments to come in the upcoming songs.

Lyrics

Subtle glance across the room
All the world is around
Find your way through the crush
We’re so close, yet so far
Yet so far

Now we’re near, gaze in silence
You try to speak, nothing comes out
Somehow I feel you surround
Somehow I feel…

Your first look is all I need
Your first look plants a seed
No forgetting this first time
As the world seems to shine
Shine, shine, shine

You start to speak
But we are both interrupted, interrupted, interrupted, interrupted, inter…
I frown, you snicker
The room hems us in

What’s your name?
What’s your fav’rite colour?
Will we marry on a beach?
What will we name our first born?
Should we leave?
Should we leave?
What’s your name?
Should we leave?
What’s your name?
Should we leave?

Your first look is all I need
Your first look plants a seed
No forgetting this first time
As the world seems to shine
Shine, shine, shine, shine, shine

Your first look is all I need
Your first look plants a seed
No forgetting this first time
As the world does shine
Shine, shine

Fin’lly, you smile and say, “I’m Me”
Shuffling my feet, staring at the floor
I sheepishly announce, “I’m You”
You ask me, wanna go?
I answer, okay sure
