After a significant amount of study on the Theme & Variations
musical form, I was ready to put my own stamp on it. Compositionally,
I find it interesting how the form allows you to stray far away
from your original basic theme. I took this philosophy to the
extreme with my treatment :
- Theme: Regal, Noble, tonal, lyrical, smooth, classical
in approach
- 1st Variation: Sad, Sombre, still tonal and smooth,
but in a minor key instead and with changes in rhythm
- 2nd Variation: Vivace, lively, faster, more rhythmic
and dissonant, atonal
- 3rd Variation: Marcato, well marked, pointillistic
texture alla Webern
- 4th Variation: Maestoso, majestic, back to lyrical
and classical approach
The word Montrose in the title refers to the street in Toronto
where I had my first apartment.
