Tool is a piece that I composed for inclusion on my band’s album, Strange Machine, as a means of having a bit of an instrumental interlude in between songs on the album. As the album’s concept revolved around the idea of machines and how we control them and they control us, Tool ended up being a perfect piece to explore my motoric minimalism that tends to be quite common in my more “classical” compositions.
But this impersonal, stoic repetition also symbolizes our world’s propensity to a mass industrialization complex at any price that’s resulting in mass environmental degradation. We use tools to achieve this but in essence, we are the real mindless tools being manipulated by the corporate powers.
