Programme Notes
Gordon and Norma Yeager shared an inseparable bond during their 72 years of marriage. Even a tragic car crash in October 2011 could not separate them. In an effort to save their lives, hospital staff placed them “bed-beside-bed,” with Gordon’s right hand holding Norma’s left until they both took their final breaths. This composition musically captures the following scenes in these movements:
- The accident that marked the beginning of their love affair’s end (5:15)
- Their final moments spent clinging to each other’s love (6:15)
- And, from the ashes of tragedy, the recognition of what a couple’s love can accomplish in this world (8:30)
Musical Notes:
As the story that inspired this concerto originates in the heartland of America (Iowa), I was influenced by the American orchestral sound that I so enjoy—especially the works of Copland, Glass, and Hollywood film music. This is not a traditional concerto showcasing the clarinet with cadenzas. Instead, I have the clarinet omnipresent in a central solo role, portraying the essence of the protagonists and their journey as the story unfolds.
