Programme Notes

When I first read Just Cracked, a short poem by my friend, Meg Freer, I knew I would want to set it to music. In Meg’s touching prose, she evokes a heartfelt, consoling spirit for a loved one who is in a state of mourning. Reading her poem, it got me thinking how challenging it can be to find those right words to give a grieving friend or family member. I appreciate Meg’s approach because it acknowledges the pain. As agonizing as it might be, we all must face the pain but come to the realization that in time we can heal. My musical treatment aims to reinforce Meg’s comforting words. I wanted the voices of the choir to provide that gentle support. And I really like the symbolism of having many voices come together to provide the caring we need in those times. Everyone who is suffering should feel like they have the support of many.
