Just Cracked

Programme Notes

When I first read Just Cracked, a short poem by my friend Meg Freer, I knew I wanted to set it to music. In Meg’s touching prose, she evokes a heartfelt, consoling spirit for a loved one in mourning. Her poem made me reflect on how difficult it can be to find the right words to comfort a grieving friend or family member. I appreciate Meg’s approach because it acknowledges the pain. As agonizing as it may be, we all must face it, while also recognizing that, in time, healing is possible.

My musical treatment aims to reinforce Meg’s comforting words. I wanted the voices of the choir to offer gentle support. I also love the symbolism of many voices coming together to provide the care we need in those moments. Everyone who is suffering should feel like they have the support of many.
