Programme Notes

Wood & Metal Bars is a composition in which I continue to explore my fascination with looping motifs. Minimalist music has always had a strong connection to percussion, especially in the works of Steve Reich, whose influence on my music is profound. In composing this percussion-only piece, I wanted to give equal importance to melody as well as rhythm. This led me to create a quartet using the four main mallet instruments, allowing me to explore the balance of timbres between the wood and bell-like sounds.

What makes Wood & Metal Bars unique compared to many of my other works is that it is not programmatic—it is not based on a specific non-musical concept. However, what remains consistent with my other compositions is its invitation for the listener to enter a different headspace and engage in introspection.

I find the piece to be energetic and uplifting. When I was composing it, I was in a good place in my life, feeling content, and I hope that sense of positivity comes through in the music.
