Continuing the Odyssey of Meditating in the Arctic

I am happy to announce that I have been commissioned by acclaimed trumpeter, composer, and educator Spencer Brand to compose a new work for solo trumpet and fixed electronics inspired by my time in the Arctic three years ago. This is an important piece for me to compose, as it will be the first of what I hope will be many works created under the Arctic Meditations umbrella.

When I was in the Arctic, I was completely captivated by the serenity of the surroundings. Even though the camaraderie I developed with my fellow artists was deeply engaging and special during that residency, I equally cherished the time I spent by myself—sitting on a shorefront and looking out at the endless water, glaciers, and icebergs. It was incredibly nurturing to my soul to enter a higher plane of consciousness in such a setting. It is these emotions that I will attempt to capture in the immersive and resonant music I will compose for Spencer and others.

I’m looking forward to composing Arctic Meditations – Clarity for Spencer this spring. If all goes to plan, we’ll be looking at a world premiere performance this fall. Stay tuned (e-newsletterblog, and social media) for updates on this and all my other projects.
