I’m In Kelowna!

It’s taken me 16 years, but I’ve finally returned to beautiful Kelowna, BC (again for music!). Nestled within the breathtaking landscapes of Canada’s Columbia Mountains, I’m honoured to be the 2026 Artist-in-Residence at the Woodhaven Eco Culture Centre, hosted by the Okanagan Campus of the University of British Columbia.

During my residency, I’ll be both performing and composing, and it already feels like an inspiring place to create.

Last Saturday, I did something for the first time in a very long time: I sat down at the piano—not just to play a few notes, but to practice with intention. Earth Hour is a work I’ve performed many times over the years, but not recently. In recent years, I’ve been so immersed in composing for other performers that I’ve had few opportunities to perform myself.

You might think returning to the piano after such a long break would feel daunting. To my surprise, it felt wonderful. No, I wasn’t at my best, and there were plenty of moments that reminded me how much work lies ahead. But I wasn’t expecting perfection. Instead, I rediscovered the simple joy of making music with my own hands. It was a reminder of why I fell in love with the piano in the first place.

While I’m here, I’m also beginning work on Earth Hour 3. Apparently, I’ve settled into a pattern of writing a new Earth Hour every ten years! There’s something exciting about standing at the beginning of a new work and imagining where my musical voice will lead over the next few years as I continue exploring environmental themes through sound.

To begin that journey in such an inspiring natural setting feels especially meaningful.

Many thanks to the wonderful staff at UBC Okanagan and Wentworth Music for providing everything I need to make this residency such a productive, creative, and inspiring experience.
