Anatomy of the Recovering Brain

I am pleased to announce that one of Canada’s foremost new music presenters, NUMUS, has commissioned me to compose an ambitious new work for bass clarinet, instrumental cameos, and fixed electronics called Anatomy of the Recovering Brain. Acclaimed bass clarinetist, my friend and collaborator, Kathryn Ladano, and I started conversations about this project 1.5 years ago after she shared with me the challenges she has faced recovering from a brain injury.

It’s Kathryn’s story that has inspired this composition…

Unfortunately, many in our society battle the after-effects of a brain injury like Kathryn. It’s important to me that this composition incorporates the voices of other brain injury survivors in order to describe their challenges and successes in overcoming their prolonged debilitating hardships. The goal here is to bring awareness to the invisible mental health impacts and struggles of having a brain injury. That’s why I don’t just see this as a piece of music, but also as an audio documentary and a community-engagement project.

I’m so happy that Kathryn and NUMUS are collaborating with the Ontario Brain Injury Association and the Brain Injury Association of Waterloo-Wellington on this project. I hope our musical work will help shine a light on the amazing work they’re doing to support survivors, their loved ones and the medical community who treat them.

I myself have never suffered a brain injury, but I know many that have. One does not have to look too far within their network to find someone impacted by this issue. It’s rampant but for some reason, not discussed very much. We need to change that. Anatomy of the Recovering Brain is dedicated to everyone I know impacted by this. ❤️

Many thanks to the Ontario Arts Council, the Waterloo Region Community Foundation and the Region of Waterloo Arts Fund for funding NUMUS’ commission.

What a thrill it is to be making music with Kathryn once again, especially after all she has gone through these past few years. I’ll be composing this piece in the 1st months of the new year in anticipation of her world premiere performance on June 11, 2023 at the Registry Theatre in Kitchener.

Stay tuned to my social media channels, my blog posts and my e-newsletter for updates on our progress.
