Programme Notes
While viewing footage on YouTube, I was completely shocked by the brutality of the violent crackdown on protesters in Cairo, Egypt, on August 14, 2013. Within hours, hundreds were killed as army bulldozers cleared encampments occupied by people protesting the army’s removal of the democratically elected president. Live ammunition and tear gas were used as people ran for their lives or tried to save the injured. Despite the carnage, many protesters remained defiant, chanting political slogans and fighting back. This piece attempts to capture the horror of that day. The source material heard within the piece was recorded by eyewitnesses.
