Programme Notes

It was both an honour and a privilege to receive text from Ty the Poetess, Barrie’s Poet Laureate, to set to music. I was immediately struck by the poem’s title—at first glance, it seemed to suggest something negative. That ambiguity inspired the opening of the composition, which begins with a sense of hesitation and subtle dissonance.

As humans, we often view the idea of being “lost” as something undesirable. Similarly, the word “noise” can carry connotations of chaos or unpleasantness. But I’ve always believed that music is, in essence, organized noise—and being lost in it can be one of the most fulfilling experiences, especially when expressed through the human voice.

Ty’s poem begins with a compelling first line, but quickly unfolds into a powerful message of self-empowerment and hope. As the text progressed, so did the music—shifting in tone to reflect the poem’s inspiring vision. Her words speak to the strength of community and the unifying power of song, reminding us that even in a divided world, we can find connection through shared expression.

At a time when empathy and common ground is often overshadowed by division, this collaboration felt especially meaningful. I can think of no better way to bring people together and celebrate our collective humanity than through the fusion of poetry and music.
