A lot of people know me as someone with a very Type A personality. I like things to be highly organized. I’ve never been officially diagnosed with OCD, but I can see myself having some of those tendencies.
This aspect of my personality sometimes extends into my composing life, and it can be helpful when creating a new work, particularly when mapping out its structure or developing a “game plan.” That being said, I’ve learned over the years that not every creative process has to begin with a detailed outline.
Some of my most fulfilling composing experiences have started with simple curiosity. I sit at the piano without expectations and let exploration guide me. There is freedom in not knowing where the music will go. Spontaneity invites surprise. It disrupts familiar patterns and opens unexpected pathways.
Structure eventually plays an important role, but that initial freedom keeps the creative process alive. Creating without a blueprint reminds me that creativity thrives in openness.
