Feeling Grateful to Spend Your Kids’ Inheritance

For the past few weeks, I’ve been very fortunate to sit in on rehearsals for the new musical, Spend Your Kids’ Inheritance. I’ve composed the music for this show. It’s been a part of my life for the past five years. I’m so happy to see it hit an important moment with its world premiere production at the Toronto Fringe Festival this July. Since day 1, this has been an endeavour based on love and camaraderie, which is quite fitting since the story and theme of the show is focussed on that as well. It’s so fascinating to sit in a room, hours on end, watching a bunch of people from different walks of life come together to make a work of art. Of all the various projects I’ve been involved with over the years, none has captured the spirit of teamwork more than this show. Rightfully so…musicals involve so many artistic disciplines. It’s like being in the army, but minus the guns and violence.

This well-oiled machine is led by a General, or in our case, a Director. And that person is Andrew Lamb. I’ve never met such a kind-hearted soul like Andrew. He nurtures the most amazing positivity in a room. Even though Andrew’s a few years younger than me, he reminds me so much of my dad…and that’s a good thing.

The cast and creative on our show are amazing people. Despite all of their hard work, every rehearsal has such a spirit of joviality and friendliness. And did I mention they are so talented? When you hear songs in your head and they are now brought to life with even more panache and flair than that sound on your computer…no words can describe how that makes you feel as a composer.

And finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t give a special thanks to Catherine Frid. Catherine walked up to me at a Playwrights Guild of Canada event 5 years ago asking if I wanted to write music for her show. I instantly said yes! I had written a short musical when I was a student (that was a long time ago:)) so this has been an unbelievable creative journey pushing my musical voice into new directions.

After all the writing, planning and rehearsing, it’s show time! If you’re in Toronto between July 4-14, please make a point of seeing our show. I can pretty well guarantee that you’ll laugh and you’ll cry. It’s a beautiful story and amazingly entertaining. Buy tickets to our show – I can’t think of a better way to Spend Your Kids’ Inheritance!
