Before you read this post, I would kindly ask you to do the following:
Now doesn’t that put a smile on your face? If it doesn’t, why not? And BTW, I empathize if this song doesn’t make you happy. Sometimes happy people and happy things make me puke! As a composer, I revel in misery. My greatest joy is writing sad music. In my work as a composer of film/tv music, I find the greatest ease in writing music for horror, suspense and TV drama. Basically if it needs to brood, I’m all over it like a wet blanket. I also have a lot of passion in bringing awareness for social justice and environmental issues. And if you ever watch the news these days, there’s not a lot to be optimistic about out there. And well, the bouts of depression that I go through once in a while, don’t help either.
Despite all that though, somehow I’m able to garner some type of stimulant that puts a smile on my face! And it’s usually music. The song above, Keep on the Sunny Side, always does it for me. I sing along and for some reason I’m filled with joy. Maybe it’s such a positive trigger for me because I first discovered the song on the O Brother, Where Art Thou? Soundtrack, a movie and album I adore. It’s a pretty dinky song, but it still makes me happy!
So if Donald Trump, Syria and climate change have got you down, maybe there’s a song that will chipper you up! Feel free to share the name of the song that always puts a smile on your face.
