It’s that time of year again when students and teachers head back to school. Although I don’t teach as much as I once did, and I’m not a parent, this season still gives me butterflies in my stomach.
January 1 may mark the beginning of a new calendar year, but the day after Labour Day has always felt like the real start of a new year. There’s something about September that invites fresh beginnings, renewed routines, and the excitement—and uncertainty—of stepping into the unknown.
It also reminds me how important it is to support young people, as well as anyone who is choosing to step outside their comfort zone to learn something new, regardless of age. Learning takes courage. So does teaching.
Let’s also remember to support our teachers and ensure they have the resources and encouragement they need to inspire the next generation. The knowledge, curiosity, and critical thinking they help cultivate will shape the future of our communities and our world.
We live in uncertain times, when the value of education is questioned from many directions. To me, that makes education more important than ever. It is through learning that we develop empathy, challenge assumptions, solve problems, and imagine a better future.
To everyone beginning a new school year—or embarking on any new learning journey—I wish you curiosity, resilience, and joy.
