One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez is widely regarded as one of the most significant works of 20th-century literature—and it’s a personal favorite of mine. The way Márquez intricately chronicles the lives of seven generations of the Buendía family is nothing short of extraordinary.
This miniature composition is inspired by the novel, with each of its seven measures representing one of the seven generations. The consistency in tone from measure to measure symbolizes the continuity of the family bloodline, while subtle variations in bass and melody reflect the gradual, inevitable changes that unfold across the generations.
