Programme Notes

When the Grand River Chorus asked me to compose a new piece in recognition of their 25th anniversary, I felt honoured to be given the task for such a momentous occasion. A musical composition celebrating such an important milestone should allow the choristers and their audience to reflect on the past while bringing hope for the future. Most importantly, I want the performance of the piece to convey a profound sense of celebration.

It’s fitting that the text I set was written by one of the long-time and dedicated members of the choir, Stuart Bergstra. Stuart and his colleagues intimately know the joy that gathering together in song brings. For this reason, ‘Let’s Sing Our Songs’ has an intimate and personal quality. I believe that a verse-chorus song structure lends itself well to conveying the inspirational nature of the song.

Music is a powerful force that promotes a sense of community spirit. I feel privileged to have been invited to help express that spirit for such a wonderful choir. May the peace and love this piece espouses reach one and all, so that music can truly be in our hearts.
