Programme Notes

Strange Machine is an instrumental piece that I composed and recorded for inclusion on my band’s first album, I Can See You. It ultimately didn’t make the cut for that album, as it didn’t complement the other tracks. However, it had such an impact on me that I decided to make it the lead and title track for the band’s follow-up album. The loops and mechanical quality of the piece also inspired Strange Machine to become a concept album, with all the other tracks connected, in one form or another, to the idea of us using machines—or them controlling us.

The composition itself is somewhat unusual to include as the first track on an album of “pop” music. In essence, it’s very much akin to my other contemporary classical chamber compositions, with each instrument following a mapped-out part (except for the electric guitar).

I appreciate how the piece conveys a somewhat impersonal, dark feel, especially in the bass.
