Programme Notes

Working with the Sun is inspired by a YouTube video of the same name. Produced by SELF (Solar Electric Light Fund), this short documentary describes the excellent work that this progressive non-profit organization is doing in bringing clean renewable energy to children in South Africa.

My short, peppy composition based on this film emulates many of the rhythmic elements associated with African percussion and the rustic tone of folk instruments like the mbira. This unique tone is produced from a conventional acoustic grand piano by placing cardboard on the strings.
