I Can See You - The Frank Horvat Band

Programme Notes

I wrote Dark to Light after I discovered an old notebook which contained poetry that my now wife, Lisa, had written as a teenager. The words really jumped out at me as something that would work well in a musical context. This is one of many poems that I used when writing my two band albums, I Can See You and Strange Machine.

I feel that the three lines of poetry that are constantly repeated throughout are poignant enough that make the repetition worthy. In a way, they describe our natural world but it also represents darkness and light and those transitions back and forth within one’s soul.

Orchestrally, the quartet really was devised as a trio. The electric bass very much mirrors the melodic contour of the voice. The electric piano provides the harmonic foundation and the constant looping of the exact same figure by the marimba provides the motoric rhythmic drive that I so often appreciate.

– Frank Horvat

Out of blackness light must come
Out of darkness must come light
Only light can come out of darkness
