Programme Notes

In Chapter 11 of The Art of Happiness in a Troubled World, the Dalai Lama shares one of his favorite passages from the great Buddhist master Shantideva:

“As long as space remains, as long as sentient beings remain, until then, may I too remain, and dispel the miseries of the world.”

This quote deeply resonates with me, as it speaks to the profound sense of purpose we all carry, regardless of our circumstances. No matter how difficult life becomes, each of us has a unique and essential place in the world. Some may find such a thought frustrating—”I’m just one person; how can I make a difference?” But the truth is, our presence itself is a gift. Simply by offering positive energy, nurturing goodwill, and wishing for the well-being of others, we contribute to the healing of the world.

You don’t need to be a global leader or have millions of followers to make an impact. The act of feeling, praying, meditating, or silently wishing for peace is in itself an act of great power. These quiet intentions, though unseen, ripple through the collective consciousness and uplift humanity. In a time when many of us remain in isolation due to the pandemic, this practice of wishing well and holding space for the suffering of others feels more vital than ever. It reminds us that, in the interconnectedness of all beings, even our smallest acts of kindness and compassion can dispel the darkness and bring light into the world.
